Dr. Ram Sewak Sharma has been appointed as a Director on the Board of Sify Technologies Limited, marking a significant addition to the leadership team of the homegrown ICT infrastructure firm. With a distinguished public service career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Sharma brings deep expertise in technology-enabled governance and digital transformation.
A retired IAS officer from the 1978 Jharkhand cadre, Dr. Sharma has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s policies in the field of Information and Communication Technologies. He is best known as the founding Director General and Mission Director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), where he was instrumental in the creation and rollout of Aadhaar—the world’s largest biometric identity platform.
Dr. Sharma’s career also includes senior leadership roles in the telecom sector, notably as Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and as Secretary of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. His contributions in these roles have helped lay the foundation for India’s digital infrastructure and governance frameworks.
In addition to his public service accomplishments, Dr. Sharma has remained active in the corporate and policy space. He currently serves as an independent director on several corporate boards, including Tanla Platforms, and is the non-executive chairperson of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
He holds advanced degrees in mathematics and computer science from IIT Kanpur and the University of California, Riverside, as well as a PhD from IIT Delhi.
With his appointment, Sify Technologies gains a board member whose experience in digital policy, telecom regulation, and large-scale technology deployment is expected to provide valuable strategic direction. His deep understanding of technology as a tool for inclusion and efficiency will be instrumental in supporting Sify’s long-term vision of becoming a leader in digital transformation and ICT infrastructure.
